Preparation that begins long before Year 6
Successful 11+ preparation is not about last-minute cramming. From the earliest years, our curriculum develops strong foundations in English and Mathematics, vocabulary, comprehension, reasoning, problem-solving and independent thinking.
From Year 3, pupils benefit from dedicated 11+ lessons as part of the school curriculum, introducing and developing the skills required for selective entrance examinations in a structured and age-appropriate way. This early preparation allows children to become familiar with different question types and reasoning skills gradually, building confidence without unnecessary pressure.
As pupils progress through the school, preparation becomes increasingly focused, with work across English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, alongside examination technique, working accurately under timed conditions and approaching unfamiliar questions with confidence.
Our small classes are a particular strength. Teachers know their pupils extremely well and can identify individual strengths, address gaps and provide appropriate challenge. Preparation can therefore be tailored to the child rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
Confidence as well as knowledge
We know that academic ability alone does not determine how a child performs on the day. Children also need confidence, resilience and the ability to remain calm when faced with a challenge.
Familiarisation with examination conditions and practice papers forms part of our preparation, helping pupils understand what to expect and develop effective strategies without allowing the 11+ to dominate their final years at Newbridge.
Where senior schools include interviews or other elements within their admissions process, we also help children prepare so that they can speak confidently about themselves, their interests and their achievements.
Working in partnership with parents
Choosing the right senior school is an important decision, and we believe parents should feel informed and supported throughout the process.
During Year 5, the Headmistress meets individually with parents to discuss their child’s future pathway, including their strengths, academic profile and the senior school options that may be appropriate for them. These conversations help families consider whether selective entry is the right route for their child and begin planning for the next stage with confidence.
For families following the 11+ pathway, we are also happy to provide additional resources and guidance for use at home when requested, complementing the preparation children receive in school. Our aim is to work in partnership with families, providing support where it is helpful without creating unnecessary pressure for the child.

Our priority is always the individual child. We work closely with families to explore the options available, whether that is a selective grammar school, an independent senior school or another local secondary school, and help parents consider the environment in which their child is most likely to flourish.
